About Me

Talaria has definitely improved my confidence in conducting real scientific research. I had no clue what conducting research meant (especially for my research field: bioinformatics), and I also had no idea how to write a professional paper. Talaria has strengthened my research and writing skills, and now I feel even more inclined to pursue a career in STEM. Hopefully I can take on more complex research projects in the future using the knowledge I gained through this experience.

Research Experience

I was unsure if I would be able to handle all of the information/capable of participating in the project. There were so many unfamiliar terms and concepts that I had not heard of prior to the program. My mentor was super helpful throughout the program and explained every small question I had in detail about the project. Now at the end of the program, I feel very confident in the knowledge behind my project and I am proud with our results. I had heard about bioinformatics as a cross-section of computer science and biology. I was interested in both subjects, so I wanted to learn more about bioinformatics and possibly create a project, but I had no clue where to start or how to conduct research. Now, after participating in Talaria, I am much more confident in my interest to pursue bioinformatics, or some related major, in my future education.

Mentorship Experience

My mentor was always there to answer questions for me and we set up meetings around 2-3 times a week. My mentor was very helpful during the whole program and was very responsive to any questions I had (I'm so thankful!).

Favorite Part of Talaria

My favorite part of participating in Talaria would be the final product of my research project. I am greatly satisfied with my research paper and my new knowledge in bioinformatics.

Who I Recommend Talaria For

A student that is passionate about expanding their knowledge about a subject/conducting research, but does not have the resources to conduct a project on their own.

Advice for Future Applicants

Talaria is a great experience for those who have little knowledge/experience in conducting research. If I didn't participate in Talaria, I would have no clue about what computational biology really means, and now it's one of the top career paths I want to pursue! Be sure to apply -- there's no harm in doing so!
